Hive Heartbeat Sensors

Our unique Beehive Heartbeat Sensor sits across the top of the brood chamber in a standard Langstroth beehive (or similar) and collects multiple temperature data points as well as a sample of audio. It looks the same as a hive mat from the outside and provides beekeepers with low-cost, real-time information on the size and condition of every colony monitored.

BuzzTech’s Software Portal is the user interface for the sensor data and an effective beehive management framework for collecting and reporting on beehive inspection data.

Technical Details:

  • Batteries: 2 x AA rechargeable 2600Ah recommended
  • Battery Life: 6 months
  • Sensors: 5 x temp + 2 sec audio per hour.
  • Connectivity: Wifi (optional solar-powered 3G/Wifi Internet Gateway sold separately)

Want to start monitoring?

Our hive health sensors can be used to monitor bee colony size and condition remotely over the cellular network and can be extremely effective at reducing seasonal colony deaths.

Solar Apiary Gateway

$450 one off per apiary and $30 per month

Used to connect sensors to the internet at each site.

This is a per apiary cost that gives you the following:

  • Cellular Wireless Access Point
  • Solar Panel
  • Battery
  • Charge Controller
  • Enclosure

Hive Heartbeat Sensor

$175 NZD per device

This sensor is ideal for monitoring colony size and condition remotely through the easy to read heartbeat graphs or custom reports you have access to.

Using a range of temperatures we provide a heat map of the brood chamber that develops over time. Analysis of the heartbeat of the brood chamber reveals intriguing insight into how well the colony is able to regulate brood temperature over time.

Q: Why monitor my hives? A:

  • Assess urgency before visiting hive sites
  • It allows you to provide targeted treatments
  • Receive alerts on critical hive conditions
  • Monitor changes in colony strength over time
  • Log inspections alongside sensor data and see conditions evolve over time.
  • It allows you to lower your risk of colonies dying unexpectedly
  • You will have access to real-time colony temperature data in an easily understood format to learn more about how the bees thrive
  • Use data to train staff and monitor beekeeper performance

Q: How does the access point connect to the internet? A: We use a 3G cellular hotspot with a solar panel and battery to supply the internet to the apiary. If you don’t get cell reception in your apiary, you will need to use a local wifi connection.

Q: How many sensors can connect? A: We encourage beekeepers to put sensors in as many hives as possible. The more colonies you monitor the more efficiently you can manage them. The software has no limitations on sensor numbers and has been built to take 1 to 100k sensors per customer.

Q: What if I want to give the sensors back at the end of the 3-month pilot? A: We will give you a 100% refund on the sensor hardware if you decide to return it within the first 30 days.

Q: What if I need some help setting up the sensors or software? A: Being part of the pilot group you will get direct access to the creator of the product – Call support any time on 0278615084 for online or in-person training and support.

Q: How do I access the sensor data? A: Customers who purchase a sensor need to have an active subscription for the BuzzTech beehive management software. Users can manage apiaries, log inspections, manage landowners, monitor beekeepers, view hive and apiary level sensor analytic data.

Q: What if I want to use my home apiary and wifi? A: That’s fantastic, if you have wifi access at your hives or want to provide it, we can easily connect the sensors to your WiFi and save the cost of the Access Point and data connection
